Inspections Lifecycle Overview
Your duties as commander across the IGMC inspection cycle. CGIP standing requirement, FIR receipt within 30 days, CAR submission within 30 days, retention afterwards.
Command Actions
- Stand a CGIP at every level you command
- Sign and publish a unit-level CGIP directive
- Receive a Final Inspection Report (FIR) from the inspecting team within 30 calendar days of the out-brief
- Submit a Corrective Action Report (CAR) to IGMC or CIG within 30 calendar days of FIR receipt
- Retain inspection records per DON records schedules
Authority
You command an inspection program. MCO 5040.6K and 10 USC 8020 designate the Inspector General of the Marine Corps as the eyes and ears of the Commandant. Your unit feeds that program through your Commanding General's Inspection Program (CGIP) and through your response to IGMC and CIG inspections.
What you sign
- A unit-level CGIP directive that names your CIG, your TAIGs, and your inspection cadence.
- The Corrective Action Report (CAR) you return to IGMC or CIG within 30 calendar days of receiving the FIR.
- Any waiver request to IGMC when geography, budget, or a CIG capability gap blocks the 36-month subordinate inspection requirement.
The lifecycle
- CGIP stands up. You publish your unit-level CGIP directive and place your CIG and TAIGs in writing. Your CIG works directly for you.
- Inspection happens. IGMC or your CIG conducts the inspection. The team out-briefs you on findings.
- FIR arrives. The inspecting team submits the FIR to you within 30 calendar days of the out-brief.
- CAR returns. You submit a CAR to IGMC or CIG within 30 calendar days of receiving the FIR. Cover every FA with findings or deemed ineffective.
- Records retain. Inspection reports and corrective records retain per DON records schedules.
