Role and responsibility
The medical treatment facility (MTF) medical officer issues the light duty or LIMDU recommendation per MCO 1900.16MCO 1900.16 Chapter 8 Section 1 paragraphs 8101-8111. The MTF commander signs the LIMDU and medical extension determinations per paragraph 8110 (Limited Duty Responsibilities). The Physical Evaluation Board (PEB) recommends Permanent Limited Duty (PLD) per paragraph 8108 or Expanded Permanent Limited Duty (EPLD) per paragraph 8109 when the medical condition supports retention with permanent restriction. The Secretary of the Navy and HQMC M&RA exercise retention authority on PLD and EPLD cases. The unit commander approves the duty status, applies the duty restrictions, and tracks LIMDU compliance. The S-1 chief tracks every Marine on light duty, LIMDU, PLD, or EPLD against the re-evaluation gate. The IPAC outbound counselor cuts the duty status transaction in MCTFS through UD-MIPS per MCTFSPRIUMMCTFSPRIUM. The Monitor at HQMC M&RA coordinates PCS for PLD and EPLD personnel per paragraph 8107.
Source documents flow from the medical condition, the medical officer chit (light duty per paragraph 8103) or the LIMDU board package (LIMDU per paragraph 8104), the MTF commander signature, the unit commander approval, the duty restriction list, the PFT or CFT authorization per paragraph 8106, the deployability and PCS restriction per paragraph 8107, the Page 11 entry per MCO P1070.12KMCO P1070.12K Chapter 6, the re-evaluation appointment per paragraph 8110, the medical extension recommendation per paragraph 8111 when warranted, and the DES referral package per Chapter 8 Section 2 when PEB review applies. Outputs include the approved duty status, the duty restrictions, the operational restrictions, the documented LIMDU period, the Page 11 entries, the monthly LIMDU posture brief to the commander, the fit-for-full-duty return, the medical extension when applicable, the PLD or EPLD retention when the PEB recommends, and the DES referral when the medical condition warrants PEB review.
Per Chapter 8 paragraph 8104 (Limited Duty Overview), LIMDU runs when the medical officer expects the Marine to return to full duty within the LIMDU period. Per paragraph 8105 (Limited Duty Policy), standard LIMDU runs 6 months with a 2-month medical extension per paragraph 8111 bringing the total to 8 months maximum without DES referral. Per paragraph 8108, PLD applies to retention with permanent restriction. Per paragraph 8109, EPLD extends PLD scope for broader restrictions.

Trigger events
- Medical officer issues light duty recommendation.
- MTF medical board recommends LIMDU after a covered medical condition.
- LIMDU re-evaluation arrives with continued medical limitation requiring medical extension.
- PEB returns findings of fit for retention with permanent restriction (PLD or EPLD).
- LIMDU period extends past 8 months triggering DES referral.
- Marine on LIMDU faces deployment notification triggering paragraph 8107.
- PCS orders cut on a Marine on LIMDU.
- PFT or CFT cycle opens with a Marine on LIMDU.
- Annual PLD or EPLD review opens.
- IGMC FA inspection covers LIMDU posture.
Processing workflow
- Receive the medical recommendation. The MTF medical officer or the medical board recommends light duty (paragraph 8103) or LIMDU (paragraph 8104). Pull from the chain of command.
- Validate the recommendation. Per MCO 1900.16MCO 1900.16 Chapter 8 paragraphs 8103 and 8104, the medical scope and the expected recovery time drive the path (light duty for short duration, LIMDU for longer cases).
- Route through the MTF commander. Per Chapter 8 paragraph 8110, the MTF commander signs the LIMDU determination and the medical extension determination.
- Apply duty and operational restrictions. Per paragraphs 8106 (partial or no PFT) and 8107 (deployability and PCS), the unit commander applies the operational restrictions.
- Cut MCTFS duty status transaction. Per Appendix E and MCTFSPRIUM, the IPAC cuts the duty status transaction in UD-MIPS on entry, change, and closure.
- Document on Page 11. Per MCO P1070.12KMCO P1070.12K Chapter 6, every duty status action records on Page 11.
- Monitor re-evaluation gates. Per Chapter 8 paragraph 8110, the unit and the IPAC track the re-evaluation appointment cycle (light duty per medical chit, LIMDU at 6 months, PLD and EPLD annually).
- Process medical extension. Per paragraph 8111, the MTF recommends extension within the 2-month limit and the 8-month total threshold.
- Process PLD and EPLD retention. Per paragraphs 8108 and 8109, the PEB findings and HQMC M&RA retention authority drive PLD or EPLD status. Apply expanded duty restrictions and coordinate Monitor billet matching.
- Refer to DES on PEB-warranting findings. Per Chapter 8 Section 2 paragraphs 8201-8208 and DODI 1332.18, the MTF refers to the Disability Evaluation System when the medical condition warrants PEB review.
Systems of record and forms

Forms
- Medical Officer Chit. Per paragraph 8103 (Light Duty).
- LIMDU Board Package. Per paragraphs 8102 and 8104.
- MTF Commander LIMDU Determination Letter. Per paragraph 8104.
- PEB Findings of Fit for Retention with Permanent Restriction. Per DODI 1332.18.
- Medical Extension Recommendation. Per paragraph 8111.

Common pitfalls
- LIMDU period set past 8 months without DES referral. Per paragraphs 8105 and 8111, the total period stays at or below 8 months without DES.
- MTF commander signature missing on LIMDU or extension determination. Per paragraph 8110, the MTF commander signs.
- Re-evaluation gate missed. Per paragraph 8110, the unit and the IPAC track the gate.
- Duty restrictions not applied per medical scope. The medical officer chit and the LIMDU board package govern.
- Marine on LIMDU deployed. Per paragraph 8107, Marines on LIMDU are not normally deployable.
- PCS executed without Monitor coordination. Per paragraph 8107 and the Monitor process, the PCS routes through the Monitor for a billet supporting the medical scope.
- Page 11 omitted on any duty status action. Per MCO P1070.12K paragraph 4006, every action records.
- MCTFS transaction skipped on entry, change, or closure. Per Appendix E and MCTFSPRIUM, every action cuts a transaction.
- DES referral skipped on PEB-warranting findings. Per Chapter 8 Section 2, PEB-warranting cases refer to DES.
- PLD or EPLD applied without PEB findings. Per paragraphs 8108 and 8109 and Section 2, the PEB drives PLD and EPLD eligibility.
Decision points
- Light duty versus LIMDU. Per paragraphs 8103 and 8104, the medical officer's expected recovery time drives the path. Short-duration runs through light duty. Longer recovery runs through LIMDU.
- Standard LIMDU 6 months versus 8-month extended. Per paragraphs 8105 and 8111, the MTF recommends extension when 2 additional months support fit-for-full-duty return.
- LIMDU continuation versus DES referral. Per Chapter 8 Section 2, DES applies when the medical condition warrants PEB review. The MTF medical officer and the MTF commander weigh.
- PLD versus EPLD. Per paragraphs 8108 and 8109, the breadth of the medical restrictions and the billet matching scope drive the classification.
- PFT authorization scope. Per paragraph 8106, the medical officer authorizes partial or no PFT per the medical scope.
- PCS exception during LIMDU. Per paragraph 8107, the Monitor coordinates a PCS to a supporting billet on a case-by-case basis.
